On Thursday, February 23rd, 6-9pm, the LA Forum will host a Book Launch and panel discussion with Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich of architectural practice PATTERNS at the Vitra Showroom in Culver City. EMBEDDED documents the work and research of PATTERNS, the award-winning practice founded in Los Angeles in 1999, and includes essays by Spina and Huljich, Todd Gannon, and Marcelyn Gow. Panelists for the discussion to be announced. This newly-released book is NOT easily available through amazon.com (listed as ‘out-of-print’).

The research and collaborative based approach of the practice seeks to move between digital and material expressions. PATTERNS describes its form-making as driven by digital techniques and advanced computation. In addition to their research, projects include Prism Contemporary Art in West Hollywood; FYF Residence and Jujuy Redux, both in Rosario (Argentina); the Fluid Core Yard in Chengdu, the Skopje Concert Hall in Macedonia, and the Vestbanen KulturAtrium in Oslo.

Common Places: Printing, Embroidery, and the Art of Global Mapping
Common Places features three objects from LACMA’s permanent collection which transform printed works on paper into one-of-a-kind embroideries: a seventeenth-century valance, a cigarette silks quilt, and Alighiero Boetti’s Mappa. The resulting textiles articulate contemporary aspects of global phenomena and suggest that far from being a recent development, globalization has deep historical roots that extended into the home and everyday life.

SUBTERRANEA: DRAWINGS BY RICK GOODING
January 10–28, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, January 13th, 6:30pm

For Subterranea, architect Rick Gooding created more than 30 meticulous pencil drawings, each depicting an imaginary underground realm. Winding tunnels and labyrinthine passageways are rendered by hand, resolving into dense, intricate patterns.

In an era of digital representation, Gooding celebrates the precise and beautiful craft of manual drafting. He works without rulers or measuring devices and carefully constructs his drawings using the most basic architectural drafting tools: a straight edge, a 314 pencil, and an eraser and erasing shield. Gooding works exclusively in black and white. The simple palette occasionally produces Escher-esque qualities. Subversive flips of figure/ground and slips in optical logic confuse the readings of these rigorously constructed drawings.

These eerie illustrations inspire comparisons to Aldo Rossi’s stark linework, as well as to Surrealist painter Giorgio De Chirico’s forlorn cityscapes, in which the urban realm is inhabited as often by headless statuary as by human citizens. Gooding’s imagery evokes engine works and machine constructs, echoing power plants architecture as much as maze-like buildings for human habitation. Yet, however provocative, Gooding’s spaces are ultimately inaccessible.

RICK GOODING

Rick Gooding is a principal of the award-winning firm CHU+GOODING Architects in Los Angeles, focusing on projects for arts-related and higher education clients, including arts organizations such as MoCA, Hammer Museum, the Getty Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, Southern California Public Radio and the Autry National Center.

Gooding received a Master of Science in Architecture and Building Design from Columbia University in 1985 and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in 1984. He trained for 14 years as Project Architect or Associate with Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in New York City, Morphosis, Franklin D. Israel, Richard Meier Partners & Johnson Fain Partners in Los Angeles before joining Annie Chu in 1999.

Subterranea is his first solo exhibition.

WEDGE GALLERY

Located in a sliver of the School of Architecture, the Wedge is the exhibition venue for the Los Angeles–Burbank campus. The gallery space presents multiple shows a semester, each exhibition fitting into an overarching theme. As a venue, WEDGE addresses and brings together two audiences, the Burbank campus and Los Angeles’ greater architecture and design community. The space exhibits student work, giving students the opportunity to learn from their classmates’ drawings and models, as well as work by invited architects, artists, and faculty members.

Exhibition by Ramiro Diaz-Granados, Amorphis, SCI-Arc
Go Figure
Seeking to shift the role of the figure from a metaphorical device to a subliminal one, Go Figure promotes simultaneity in the evolution of the delineated figure by distributing cartoon and visceral features across a three-dimensional, spline based form. A delineated figure is repeated four times into two symmetrical pairs. Each pair is situated in the gallery according to different transversal regulating lines stemming from the relationship between the ground and the ceiling. One pair is centered within the space, the other is centered under one of the structural bays. Together they fill the space in a composition that confounds the legibility of each figure in favor of more sensate qualities with allusions to calligraphy and graffiti.

The Utopian City Project, Giacomo Castagnola and James Rojas
The Collaborative: A project of the Arts Council for Long Beach and The Museum of Latin American Art
Preoccupied with the idea of building an improved society, many architects throughout history have developed projects with the aim of creating the ideal city. Using Long Beach as a model, this exhibition proposes a new exercise in imagining the perfect utopian city of the future. Architect Giacomo Castagnola and Urban Planner James Rojas will collaborate to create an interactive and inhabitable model of Long Beach that will allow the visitors to propose their own ideas for the future of the city. This project will push the boundaries of the conventional architectural model, giving visitors the opportunity to view the city conceptually as well as experience it physically through the senses. By interacting, the visitor’s body becomes an integral piece of the architectural installation.
Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-81 constitutes the most comprehensive survey exhibition to date to examine the exceptional fertility and diversity of art practice in California between 1974 and 1980, a unique period in American history when the political and social roles of artists, the authority of institutions, and the “objecthood” of art were all being questioned. The years bracketing the exhibition represent the ignominious departure and auspicious arrival of two presidential leaders from California: Richard Nixon (1974) and Ronald Reagan (1980), respectively.

California Design, 1930-1965: “Living in a Modern Way”
This exhibition is the first major study of California midcentury modern design. With more than 300 objects-furniture, ceramics, metalwork, fashion and textiles, and industrial and graphic design-the exhibition examines the state’s role in shaping the material culture of the entire country. Organized into four thematic areas, the exhibition aims to elucidate the 1951 quote from émigré Greta Magnusson Grossman that California design “is not a superimposed style, but an answer to present conditions…It has developed out of our own preferences for living in a modern way.”

Letter from the President

Dear Friend of the LA Forum,
As we come to the end of another active and successful year, I want to take a few moments to recap 2011 and look toward next year. Our successes in 2011 would not have been possible without your continued support – so, from the bottom of our hearts – Thank You! We ask of you, kindly; please keep us in mind in your end-of-year giving, and in maintaining your active membership and sponsorship.

Believe it or not, it was 25 years ago that Aaron Betsky and Christian Hubert and other founding members gathered informally and created the Los Angeles Forum. Their mission was to fill a void in the discourse on architecture and urbanism in our dynamic metropolis. This year we are proud to celebrate the Forum’s 25th anniversary with a series of events and 2-month exhibition entitled Unfinished Business. The Forum will revisit the past and look to the future as we sort out various levels of “complete” work and chart new trajectories for further exploration.

Opening in July 2012, Unfinished Business aims to represent the physical, intellectual and critical inquiries embodied within the Forum’s mission over the past twenty-five years. We will rethink the Beverly Center and revisit the controversy over the (former) Ambassador Hotel and discuss the decisions surrounding the redevelopment of Grand Avenue, as well as many other subjects. Visitors will be encouraged to draw their own connections between ideas, people and works that have made up the Forum since 1987. This will be an impressive display of the Forum’s myriad explorations and will be the perfect backdrop for ForumFest 2012, a summer symposium, alumni Pecha Kucha, and other events surrounding the exhibition.

Over the past twelve months, our annual summer lecture series (both On the Map and Out There Doing It) were met with great enthusiasm. OTM: Varying Degrees explored several new institutions of higher learning. OTDI: AfterImage, held at the MAK Center, attempted to recreate the ad hoc dialogues that architects engage in with co-conspirators, consultants, and critics. The Forum also continued the tradition of hosting Pecha Kucha Nights, collaborating with BROODWORK and inviting guest artists to take part in our online gallery.

In May, we partnered with deLAB to pay tribute to departed Forum alumnus and friend John Chase with a walking tour of West Hollywood commemorating his life and work. This was the inaugural event of the John Chase Memorial Fund and in January we will be distributing a pocket-guide map designed by Keith Scharwath. Limited print editions of this map will be made possible by the John Chase Memorial Fund. To receive your copy, contribute, or learn about the Memorial Fund, please visit laforum.org/JCMF.

Infrastructurally, the Forum has been working to fine-tune our website laforum.org. Over the course of the next few months, you will notice the incorporation of more digitized 1990s Forum newsletters, old publications and documentation of past events. The archival work on the website is developing in parallel with preparations for Unfinished Business, supported by member donations and sponsorships as well as grants received in recent years. Presently, we are planning an interactive feature for the Delirious LA event calendar.

As we gear up for Unfinished Business, we hope to involve input from as many members as possible to help capture and illustrate the richness of Forum’s contributions to Los Angeles. Contact me or incoming president Thurman Grant at president@laforum.org to share your ideas, advice, bits of folklore, recollections or photos from Forum events, or just to say hello. We promise to keep you informed as we get closer to the major events coming in 2012.

We need your support today more than ever. The enclosed year-at-a-glance is just a brief outline of what we have been able to accomplish with your support this past year. Each exhibition, lecture series, collaboration and website improvement all take resources that we could not access without your help.
As the Forum moves towards its silver anniversary and beyond, I look forward to celebrating 25 years of the Forum at ForumFest 2012, the Unfinished Business exhibition, and related events throughout the coming year.

Sincerely,

Competition invites ideas for the next generation of public space

Urban Intervention: The Howard S. Wright Design Ideas Competition for Public Space invites designers to conceive a fresh vision of environmental, social, and economic opportunities on and beyond a 9-acre site at the heart of Seattle Center.

How must public space perform in the coming century? Ecologically? Socially? Economically? How can public space evolve to better meet the needs of our changing social and natural systems? What kinds of public spaces will be needed in the future and how can activation and use be encouraged and accommodated in new and inventive ways? Can we generate ideas today that will inform a new generation of cultural centers and public places?

Urban Intervention’s call for entries is about bold and creative design ideas. The competition is intended to inspire more broadly applicable solutions for major urban sites around the world, as well as contribute to a global dialogue about public space.

WHY ENTER?

The competition seeks complex, multidisciplinary design responses from a broad spectrum of innovative designers. Dialogue and publication of competition entries will be used to promote vigorous discussion about place-based and replicable innovation in public space design, including a public showcase of the most inspiring entries.

The competition is a two-phase process. In Phase 1, the jury will select up to three finalist teams to receive $30,000 to fully develop their ideas. In addition, up to seven projects will be recognized with commendations or merit awards. A broad range of proposals will be recognized through a variety of awards, programs, exhibits and publications. In Phase 2, a Grand Prize Winner will be chosen from the finalist entries, for an additional cash prize of $30,000.

(Note: a professional design contract will not be awarded on the basis of this competition.)

THE NEXT FIFTY

Urban Intervention is part of The Next Fifty, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair (also called Century 21 Exposition). Running April 21 – Oct 21, 2012, the celebration, like the 1962 Exposition, will place the Pacific Northwest in the global spotlight:

“Once again, Seattle Center will serve as an interactive platform to illuminate the world’s challenges as we explore and define our possibilities. From April 21 to October 21, 2012, millions of visitors will come to Seattle, with Seattle Center playing host to luminaries, exhibitions, speaker series and cultural events-to debate and define the future.”

-thenextfifty.org

FUNDER

The competition is funded by the Grousemont Foundation. It honors long-term civic leader Howard S. Wright, who took a simple sketch on a napkin and created a landmark building known around the world, the icon of Seattle, the Space Needle.

Urban Intervention aligns with this legacy. It will provide the next generation with a chance to both dream big and ultimately, do big. Once again, our region’s gathering space, Seattle Center, will be transformed through the vision of new leaders, ensuring that it will continue to connect to the dreams and accomplishments of the next fifty years.

Anna Neimark: Infrastructural Monument
The political monument, under the Soviet regime, was embodied in the construction of a new water infrastructure. Geography was thus transformed into an architectural scale. Concrete, machines, and water formed a single continuous artificial landscape. Representing this object as both geographic and architectural, the installation extrudes one side of the canal system into a foam wall-an infrastructural monument.
Anna Neimark’s installation, constructed out of fifty-four three-foot cubes of EPS white foam, re-imagines a piece of infrastructure as a monument of a complex history when a canal from Moscow to St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) was built during the second Five Year Plan, under Josef Stalin.
Funding provided by the Advancing Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences (ASHSS) research grant program at the University of Southern California.

Contemporary Art Territory ‘21
Intro by Eric Owen Moss
A new museum, an up-to-date art institution – what are the requirements? Noever’s special lecture at SCI-Arc will focus on his perception for the initiative of a new art institution focussing on the cultural heritage of tomorrow. His presentation will focus on a new content/a philosophy for up-to-date art institutions: “there is no contemporary architecture without the contemporary.”
CAT 21’s purpose is not to position art as the passive object of the viewer’s gaze, but rather to actively produce it and put it into action on site. Both the production and the presentation of the artworks will be publicly accessible, making CAT 21 into a catalyst of immediate dialogue between the artists, architects, designers and the art public.

Celebrating The Fourth Factor
AIA|LA Committee on Architecture in Healthcare
The title of this presentation refers to the words of Hippocrates of Kos, widely regarded as the father of Western medicine. He held that there were “three factors” important to the success of medical care: the disease, the patient, and the physician. Our presentation will expands this list to acknowledge the role of the built environment in the healing process, and is based on the now famous book by John Michael Currie, AIA “The Fourth Factor: A Historical Perspective on Architecture and Medicine” This informal discussion will explore the relationship between the practice of medicine and architecture from ancient times to the present.

ONGOING LOS ANGELES AREA EVENTS:

Women Hold up Half the Sky
LAYER is pleased to announce the opening of its installation “Cloud” at the Skirball Cultural Center. The exhibit addresses gender equity and is based on the book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. “Cloud” is suspended over the gallery as a tangible representation of the power of individuals coming together to effect change. Women Hold Up Half the Skyis designed to engage the public in global and local issues affecting women and girls. Like the book, the exhibition puts forth a compelling argument: when women gain access to credit, health care, and education, their communities become healthier, more prosperous, and more just.
